What is reflexology?

Modern reflexology is a holistic therapy which works on the feet to help heal the whole person, not just the prevailing symptoms. Reflexology is based on the principle that there are energy zones running throughout the body. This creates connected areas of the body that can be focused on through manipulating specific points on the feet. Where congestion or tension is found in parts of the feet, this is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body. Through the releasing of this tension the flow of energy through the body can be improved, stimulating the body to heal itself and restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium.

What can reflexology help with?

Reflexology can be effective in alleviating a wide range of complaints, including:

  • stress-related conditions
  • sleep disorders
  • digestive disorders
  • hormonal imbalances
  • infertility
  • pregnancy-related conditions (including preparation for labour)
  • migraine
  • back pain
  • arthritis
  • weak immune system

Reflexology works both physically and mentally and can be particularly effective in alleviating stress, anxiety, sleep problems and managing hormonal imbalances.

Can anyone benefit from reflexology?

Reflexology is a completely non-invasive therapy that can suit anyone, including babies. It is suitable for patients with chronic and long-term conditions, such as multiple sclerosis and post-cancer care. Treatment can be adapted to be more relaxing or more engaging depending on the patient, although it is important to emphasise that reflexology is not a foot massage – it is a therapeutic treatment, intending to elicit a healing response.

How can reflexology work with other therapies?

As a holistic treatment, reflexology works very well alongside a range of other therapies. If any medical concerns arise during our treatment sessions, I will advise you to seek medical advice from a GP or other specialist. For patients with orthopaedic issues Vertical Reflex Therapy can be incorporated into the treatment, but for more challenging problems I would advise you to see a Physiotherapist at the practice or an Osteopath. For patients with muscular problems that are beyond reflexology treatment they may benefit from also seeing a Sports Massage Therapist. Shelley works closely with all the practitioners at Redbourn Physiotherapy to find the best treatment route for her patients.

About Shelley Sheridan

Shelley has always been interested in healing and using a natural approach to keeping the body and mind engaged and active, which led her to study reflexology. She trained for two years at the Oxford School of Reflexology and has been practising since qualifying in 1998. Since then, she has successfully completed further training in a number of additional reflexology techniques, including Advanced Reflexology Training with Anthony Porter, Vertical Reflex Therapy with Lynne Booth and Natural Fertility and Intuitive Birth with Lena Chandler. She is also qualified to teach Baby Reflex – helping parents understand how they can use reflexology to help bond with and calm and sooth their babies. She is a fully accredited and insured member of the Association of Reflexologists.

Shelley’s approach to therapy

The initial session involves a 30-minute consultation followed by an hour’s treatment.  The consultation is an opportunity to gain a solid understanding of you and your background. This will include your medical, physical and emotional history, in order to determine any links and the best route forward for your treatment.  Based on your individual needs, complementary extensions to your reflexology treatment may be incorporated, such as using acupressure points, Indian head massage, or reiki/energy healing.  Depending on your personal condition and aims, a set of sessions or a longer-term treatment programme may be recommended.

It is quite normal for those seeking therapy to be in a vulnerable position and Shelley takes care to approach any patient or treatment with the utmost respect. Her sessions are about focusing on what you need and conducting therapy in a way you feel completely comfortable with.
